How to find the keywords you need to be targeting for SEO.

A common misconception is that once you have SEO Software such as Yoast or All in One SEO installed on your blog or website, you don’t need to be doing anything more for Search Engine Optimisation. This is definitely not the case, as Software & Plugins like Yoast SEO can help for a portion of the technical aspect of SEO, but using plugins alone won’t bring in more visitors to your website.

For SEO to be effective at all, you must have targeted some valuable keywords, and you must execute this targeting effectively. In this guide, we’ll show you the basics in finding the keywords you’ll want to rank for, along with some tools you can use to help the process.

On each page and blog post, you’ll want to be targeting one main keyword per page. This means that if you’re a Window Cleaning company, you’ll want to have a page for Commercial Window Cleaning and Residential Window Cleaning, along with any other services you’re offering.

Finding keywords for your websites individual pages

In this section we’ll be showing you how to find keywords to target for your websites pages. First you’ll want to find the name of the service you offer, and then the city you are in. For Example: Lawyer Melbourne.

Next we’ll be going to a website called SEMRush.com, this is an industry standard tool that most reputable SEO’s utilise, it costs $79USD per month. Don’t worry: you’ll be able to use it for your purposes a little bit without subscribing.

First head to SEMRush.com, Then you’ll want to type in the service name and city, as shown below, select AU and press SEARCH

You’ll then be presented, with a “phrase match report”. This report will show you the following things;
Keyword – The keyword being searched into Google.
Volume – The number of monthly searches for this keyword.
CPC – The average Cost Per Click if you were to purchase Google Adwords for this keyword.

For each service listed in the Phrase match report, if your business offers this service and it has a reasonable amount of monthly searches. It is advisable to create an individual page for this service targeting this keyword specifically.

What is a reasonable amount of monthly searches?
This depends on your industry, if you only make a few dollars per transaction, it’s not worth going after a keyword which only has a very low amount of monthly searches. However, if you are a Cosmetic Surgeon making thousands of dollars per patient, for example, it would make sense to go after keywords with low monthly search Volume.
